The 129th U.S. Rose Parade was launched with great fanfare in Pasadena City, L.A., on the first day of 2019. The theme "Rhythms of Taiwan" chosen by China Airlines this year wooed the crowds with cartoon figures of Third Prince Nezha. The float went on to take first prize for international floats once again, showcasing the beauty of Taiwan on the international stage.
The design of the China Airlines "Rhythms of Taiwan" float was inspired by traditional artistic formations with temple parade figures as key highlights. The entire float was 55 feet long, 18 feet wide, and 35 feet high. Playful Third Prince characters decorated its length while a huge red Taiko drum created a festive mood. The float was also bedecked with carnation, orchids, roses and chrysanthemums to reflect China Airlines' longstanding commitment to green energy, environmental protection and sustainable development, as well as the cultural diversity of Taiwan.
"Melody of Life" was the theme of the Rose Parade this year so China Airlines invited STC Performing Arts, a popular local performing group, to give a performance of Techno Prince Nezha that included authentic "Taiwan-style" techno music and choreography backed by six Taiko drummers. Fireworks shot from the sides of the float during the procession bringing the crowd to fever pitch. All of these communicated the passion and energy of Taiwan to the world at the start of the new year.
The Rose Parade is one of the top three new year festivals in the U.S. China Airlines has won 27 successive awards since it began taking part in 1987. This year, China Airlines partnered again with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tourism Bureau to become the only winning airline. A new generation of Taiwanese motifs is being introduced by China Airlines as part of its mission to promote the unique culture of Taiwan. The cultural and artistic landscapes being presented will show the world a different side of Taiwan.
