The China Airlines Board of Directors met today (3/18) and approved the appointment of Mr. Shing-Hwang Kao as the new president of the Taiwan-based carrier. Kao has previously served as a Senior Vice President of China Airlines.

Kao joined China Airlines as a flight attendant in 1986 after graduating from the Department of Transportation Management at National Cheng Kung University. He was among the first batch of trainees chosen that went to North Dakota in the US for flight training as part of China Airlines’ internal pilot training program. Upon his return to Taiwan, Kao rose through the ranks as First Officer, Captain, Check Pilot and Instructor Pilot before joining the management team in 2003. Further positions included Assistant Chief Pilot, Chief Pilot, Assistant Vice President and Vice President of Flight Operations, and Senior Vice President. Aircraft he flew include A300-B4, A300-600R, A340, A330, and 747-400. Past management roles included corporate safety, flight operations, cabin crew, system operation control, finance, epidemic response, occupational safety and health, Corporate Sustainability Committee, and Corporate Environmental Committee. Kao is therefore a veteran of China Airlines with 35 years of experience stretching from front-line units all the way up to executive management.

China Airlines Chairman Su-Chien Hsieh had served as the acting president of China Airlines since his appointment in April 2019. Hsieh will now concentrate full-time on his role as chairman.
