The results of the 2023 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) and Global Corporate Sustainability Awards (GCSA) were announced today (11/15). As expected, China Airlines won awards for the tenth consecutive year, including five top awards this year. The airline received the top honor of “The Most Prestigious Sustainability Awards - Top Ten Domestic Companies Award” in its first year of entry, dominating the Taiwanese airline industry and beating out one hundred other contenders.
Best Sustainability Reporting and Climate Leadership Awards
At the award presentation ceremony for TCSA and GCSA held today, Vice President of the Legislative Yuan Chi-Chang Tsai personally presented the awards to China Airlines President Shing-Hwang Kao. The record-breaking haul of five awards for China Airlines included “Best Report” for sustainability reporting (the only consecutive win in the service industry), the “Best Performance in a Specific Category - Climate Leadership Award and the Social Inclusion Leadership Award”, “The Most Prestigious Sustainability Award - Top Ten Domestic Companies (Service Industry), and the GCSA “Sustainability Reporting Silver Award”.
As a sustainability pioneer of the international airline industry, China Airlines has continued to set new industry benchmarks both domestically and abroad. The airline has also repeatedly surpassed itself in sustainability performance. In addition to its comprehensive corporate environment and energy risk management mechanisms, China Airlines led the way in issuing independent reports using the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework. Additionally, the airline was instrumental in creating the Declaration on Forest and Biodiversity Conservation and participated in the SkyTeam “The Sustainability Flight Challenge” for two straight years. This year’s "Sustainability Demonstration Flight” even became the first passenger-carrying flight in Taiwan to use Sustainability Aviation Fuels (SAF). Carbon neutrality for all passengers and cargo on the flight was achieved through the ECO Travel program. China Airlines actively supports renewable energy development and transformation around the world through net zero flights. The use of 10% SAF on all ferry flights by the A321neo represented another major step towards Net Zero by 2050.
To uphold its sustainability philosophy of “giving back to society and creating social value”, China Airlines hosts various charity and environmental protection activities including coastal clean-ups, tree-planting, volunteer teaching, and sports camps. The airline is also a longstanding supporter for disadvantaged groups, seniors, and Taiwanese athletes. This year, children from an indigenous choir and the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families were invited to take part in a charity pilot camp. Learning about aviation through simulator visits helped the children explore their own possibilities and contribute to an inclusive society.
China Airlines’ global sustainability leadership has been recognized with inclusion in the “Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) - Emerging Markets” for seven consecutive years, including being ranked first in the global airline industry in 2022. The airline was chosen by the FTSE4Good Index Series on seven occasions and ranked in the Top 1% of the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook in 2023. Other awards include the National Sustainable Development Award and National Enterprise Environmental Protection Award.
