China Airlines Inducted into DJSI for the Eighth Consecutive Year, Introduces Carbon Reduction Project on Corporate Purchasing of SAF

2023 Dec 11

The results of the 2023 Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) have been announced. For the eighth consecutive year, China Airlines, the Taiwan based carrier, has been selected as a constituent stock for Emerging Markets, receiving the second highest score in the global airline industry. The airline has received widespread international recognition for its outstanding performance and has established itself as one of the leaders in sustainability within airline industry.

DJSI is the most authoritative index on corporate sustainability performance and is an important reference for global institutional investors. S&P Global, the international sustainability assessment body, evaluated the environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) performance of more than 13,000 companies around the world, identifying the top 10% of businesses in terms of sustainability performance in each industry. This year, 61 airlines from around the world took part in the evaluation. China Airlines scored full marks in the Waste, Water, Passenger Safety, Sustainable Marketing & Brand Perception, Business Ethics, and Transparency & Reporting categories, and received the highest score in the airline industry for the Biodiversity, Talent Attraction & Retention, Information Security, Cyber Security & System Availability, and Labor Practice Indicators categories. An outstanding performance in all ten categories demonstrated the airline’s success in integrating its business strategy with its sustainability philosophy.

Innovative ECO CART In-flight Sorting and Recycling

No effort is spared by China Airlines when it comes to promoting ESG. The airline has taken part in the SkyTeam Alliance “The Sustainable Flight Challenge” for two years running. The Sustainability Demonstration Flight program was expanded this year, making China Airlines the first Taiwanese carrier to operate passenger and cargo-carrying flights on Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). The 15-fold improvement in associated carbon reduction performance won accolades for “Best Inflight Supply Chain” and “Best Adopted Solution”. The spirit of the sustainability demonstration flights was also expanded by China Airlines to cover routine operations. In-flight sorting of waste for recycling was trialed and is now being progressively rolled out to all long-haul routes. Aluminum cans, glass bottles, PET bottles and paper waste produced from in-flight services are now sorted, sealed in eco-friendly trash bags, and placed in the ECO CART to further reduce the burden on the planet through eco-friendly practices. As the trailblazer on sustainability in the transportation industry, China Airlines became the first Taiwanese operator to join the SAF program, jointly organized by the international fuel company and the blockchain platform. A new SAF corporate purchasing partnership model has now been adopted to provide traceable and verifiable carbon reduction reports. SAF will be progressively introduced on passenger and cargo-carrying flights to reduce carbon footprints in conjunction with supply chain vendors and corporate customers. The initiative will serve to support the global transition to sustainable energy, strengthen corporate net zero partnerships, deliver carbon reductions for both parties, and make further inroads towards the goal of Net Zero by 2050.

“Continued implementation of ESG to create sustainable corporate competitiveness” has been embraced by China Airlines as its core for sustainable development. The success of sustainability practices has received extensive domestic and international recognition including strong performances at the “Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards” for ten consecutive years. This year, the airline surpassed itself by winning its first-ever “The Most Prestigious Sustainability Award - Top Ten Domestic Companies Award” and was ranked as the top-performing airline in the world by the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook.
