China Airlines Sustainability Success Nets Five Top Sustainability Awards Wins Top Sustainability Reporting Award for Third Consecutive Year
2024 Dec 11
China Airlines, a Taiwan based carrier, continues to deliver results, with outstanding performances in sustainability; the carrier has won the top five awards at the 2024 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards (TCSA) and Global Corporate Sustainability Awards (GCSA). This brings the winning streak to 11 consecutive years. In particular, winning the Service Industry Best Report Award in sustainability reporting for the third consecutive year demonstrates China Airlines’ unwavering commitment and proactive approach to sustainability.
Minister of Environment Ministry Chi-Ming Peng personally presented China Airlines Chief Sustainability Officer James Chung with the awards at the 2024 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Awards ceremony today (12/11). The five top awards garnered by China Airlines included the Service Industry - Best Report, The Most Prestigious Sustainability Awards - Top Hundred Domestic Companies Award, Climate Leadership Award and Social Inclusion Award for Best Performance of Specific Category, and the GCSA Sustainability Reporting Gold Award.
As global airline leader in sustainability, China Airlines was the first carrier to publish independent reports based on the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) framework. The carrier also participated in the SkyTeam Aviation Challenge (TAC) for three years in a row, and operated the first passenger-carrying flight with Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), combining it with ECO Travel to carry out net zero carbon flight operations for all passengers and cargo. This year, China Airlines launched the SAF partnership program for corporate clients. This resulted in the first refueling of a freighter with SAF and the first one-time value chain collaboration on passenger-carrying flights in Taiwanese airline history. The initiative is aimed at promoting energy transition and the development of low-carbon transportation in the Taiwanese airline industry as part of the push to realize the sustainability target of Net Zero by 2050.
In keeping with its sustainability philosophy of giving back to society and creating social value, China Airlines continues to promote a range of charity projects, including coastal clean-ups, tree-planting, charity baseball and basketball camps, and volunteer teaching. The projects encompass environmental protection and caring for disadvantaged groups. This year, China Airlines partnered with Taipei Zoo to adopt the Formosan Pangolin, a protected species, for the first time. Teachers and students from Baiji Elementary School in Taoyuan were treated to a free visit to the zoo, with a guided tour providing education on wildlife conservation.
The sustainability performance continues to attract international recognition as well. This includes being selected as a constituent stock of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) - Emerging Market for the eighth consecutive year, becoming the first transportation company in Taiwan to complete the Science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) review, being chosen as a constituent stock of the FTSE4Good Index Series for the ninth time, and being ranked in the top 5% of the global airline industry in the Sustainability Yearbook 2024 published by the international sustainability rating body S&P Global. China Airlines was also the only transportation company in Taiwan to make the cut on seven occasions. China Airlines will continue crafting sustainable and eco-friendly flying experiences for travelers around the world while also progressively enhancing the ESG sustainability value of our transportation services.
